Ethiopia possesses twelve major river basins, which form four major drainage systems, namely: The Nile basin, The Rift Valley, The Shebelli-Juba and The North-East Coast. All river basins except the Nile basin face water shortages. Most of the rivers in Ethiopia are seasonal and there are almost no perennial rivers below 1,500 m altitude.
